B-24H #41-28874
History Of Flight: This factory-fresh B-24 was en route from Hamilton Field to Tucson on its way to England with a brand new crew to fight in the war. As they were approaching Tucson, they entered a thunderhead and decided to turn around and fly to Phoenix to land where the weather wasn't so bad. In doing so, they didn't realize they were in the middle of the Santa Catalina mountain range and hit the right vertical stabilizer on the top of a peak. The plane then spun-in and crashed in the mountains 4 miles away.
| Vertical stabilizer with the serial number partly visible. | An intact compass only missing the oil inside! |
| Pilot's chair and part of instrument dash. | Stabilizer and fuselage skin. |
| Part of the wing's superstructure. | An airman's watch found by Robert Kropp. |
