A-20H  #44-002

History Of Flight: First Lt. Russell Mathern and Capt. Holbrook Snyder left Hobbs Field, New Mexico, en route to Tucson on the fourth leg of their flight from Wright Field, Ohio.  At 9:34 PM, the pilot contacted the Cochise Radio Range and reported they were flying at 9,500 ft. and encountering heavy thunderstorms. At 30 miles east of Tucson, the weather was so bad that they decided to turn around and land at an airfield not as severely affected by the weather.  While engaged in a right-hand turn, they crashed into the southern slope of the Rincon Mountains.
